Part 2 represents this sort of hero representation a person looks up to. Part 3 represents working for something/being led around by your leash (tie). Part 4 represents sleep/death. Maybe i’m just making these explanations up and they’re really just abstract art with no explanation needed for the title. The dimensions of the designs/prints are about 9″ by 13″.

The first assignment for my Screen-printing class was to learn the many ways to create stencils in a silk screen and how to register when you’re printing multiple layers/colors. i’m extremely happy with how this came out after working for a good 2 months on this. it’s an image i designed based on my old house, sort of abstracted to include my sketchy, cartoonish style as well as some representational elements. i intend to give everyone in my family that spent part of their lives in that house a copy of one of these prints. The title is sort of a rhyming play on the phrase, “Home is Where the Heart is.” it’s called, “Home is Where i Departed.” The dimensions of the paper are roughly 15″ x 22″ and the printed image is roughly 11″ x 15″. Click the thumbnail to open the picture up in a new window. i’ll be back later with more updates as i get them done.

The first assignment for my Typography class was to make a portrait of an author, incorporate a quote of his/hers, using just letters and type forms. i’m extremely happy with how this came out after working for about 9-10 hours total on it. if you’re a fan of Chuck Palahniuk, i encourage you to zoom in on the image. i’m betting you’ll find at least a dozen or so different quotes from all of his books. The quote i chose was from Diary, and it reads, “We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.” i thought it related to the goal of an artist that is creating work that will impact people’s lives not just now, but throughout time.

So, the last time i wrote a blog post was after finishing my Summer 2-D Design Course. it has since been over 5 months, a long time for someone who wants to be a professional artist with a successful website, but i’ve been busy… Here’s a brief recap of what’s been going on, along with a couple Flash slide shows so you can see for yourselves.

i was in the process of buying my own Studio/Condo. it took a long time, mainly because Bank of America (HATE LiST?) screwed at least 4 of us in the process by leaving us hanging after 2-3 months of awaiting a closing date, but i started the process over with Central Bank, with a better rate, and finally closed on October 30. i am officially a Homeowner living in my dream space! During this whole process, i started another illustration class and a drawing class, my sister, Amy, had a baby girl, and i grew a beard and shaved it off… sorry, Dan.

i am now moved and settled in for the most part (i still need a couch, a TV, and blinds for my windows). it feels great to have a space to call my Art Studio as well as my own Home! Along with my 2 classes, i’ve been creating some great stuff, too (i even made a painting called “RJ The Spaceman” with my friend, Julia, who i haven’t seen in 5 years).

The first slide show is of a bunch of pictures of my studio, starting with when i saw it back in May?, to how my studio looks now, my first dinner party, my niece Riley, and my Christmas tree. The second slide show is of all my classwork, starting with the best work from my Drawing class, then from my illustration class, and ending with a few pictures of the art i’ve done over the past few months. Most of the drawing classwork are drawings of still life setups, copy plates, and even a diorama we had to make for both classes. It was supposed to be an emotional theme, so I chose something that was in my old mind, but I have since moved past it, so don’t worry… I also did some cool things like the “Watchmen” stills. Hope you like the art. If you have any questions about any of it, feel free to post a comment and ask.

i can’t say i’ll be posting anything real soon, but i will say this: i’m finishing a children’s book, working on a large scale graffiti piece for those 2 back walls (green/grey), and will be updating the site with new Hate/Love List entries, comics, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Come back to check all of it out later this month…

Click the thumbnails below to open the slide shows up in a new window.

Here are 5 pictures of my sixth and final class project (until the Fall, anyway). Our assignment was to create 2 different texture based designs by cutting out paper and folding it to make it “rise up” off the page, so to speak. The first one is my take on a Moon and Stars, but it sort of suffers from craft. i hated the way it looked without color on the white paper, and sort of regret not using dark blue or black paper, so i painted it. After the paint, though, it looked messy and sort of ruined all the time it took to create the unique cuts and folds. Oh well. The second one is a pop-up version of a sweet mustache. The dimensions of the designs are 10″ by 10″.

The first was to make a color wheel of the 12 colors, 3 primary, 3 secondary, and 6 tertiary. The second was to create color relativity in the 3 primary and 3 secondary colors by comparing them to a 5-step grey-scale. The third was to make 2 complementary colors vibrate. The fourth was to create the appearance of translucency between some colors. The fifth was to create a Hue, Value, Saturation scale with 2 complementary colors and the tint/shade scales. The sixth was to create a design that used 1 color laid over 2 different tones to make that 1 color look like 2, and then create a design that used 2 different colors laid over 2 different tones to make those 2 colors look like 1 (even though mine don’t work like they’re supposed to). The dimensions of the designs are 10″ by 10″.
